Our sixth game of the season on 21 October was an away match against Barming on a very windy morning.
Missing a couple of players Ditton started with Arthur in goal, Ollie and Joe G in defence, with Theo and Eddie as midfield/strikers. The early minutes were a close battle with some close exchanges. Barming soon pushed forward and had a strong attack but some great strength and skills from Arthur in goal denied them an early lead. The Ditton players seemed rattled by this exchange and needed to close down the ball and hold possession more. We lost the ball and Barming seized the momentum and scored. Ditton continued to push but again some loss of possession in key areas saw Barming on the attack again and Ditton were a couple down.
The second period of play saw Ollie and Alfie in defence with Evan and Eddie up front. This was to prove a very close period of play with no goals for either team. The Barming keeper kept the ball out of his net with some brilliant strong saves and Ditton also had a shot off the post. A great run by Eddie on the left wing saw the ball crossed into the box where Evan was waiting to pounce. Alas the cross was just too close to the Barming keeper who cut it off. The great play by Ditton, our best period of the game, then saw a great pass out of a defensive position by Ollie, cross field, to Alfie who had tracked forward into an attacking position but alas the first touch saw the ball roll out of play. So close...! The strong passing and play by Ditton in this period was great to see with Ollie and Alfie playing as a strong defensive unit to keep Barming out of the Ditton goal.
Joe G was back on in defence to partner Alfie and Theo joined Evan in attack for the third period. Ditton continued to try and push forward and some moments of great play and passing were alas joined with some periods of lost focus and shape. Barming continue to attack hard during this third period and were soon rewarded with another goal. Some great midfield play from Evan went unrewarded despite him demonstrating great strength and spirit. Again, Barming came back and grabbed a couple more in this period.
Despite the score line Ditton continued to play positively. Attacks were very well defended by Barming who showed great strength across all areas of the pitch. Again their keeper kept the ball out of the net despite some strong play from Ditton. Barming grabbed a couple more in this period with a final score line that was perhaps a little unfair for Ditton – with Barming's keeper being their star.
Having showed great spirit and fight in his defensive position Alfie was a well-deserved man of the match.
