Match Report

After an unsuccessful Autumn Festival Cup and some positive friendly games over the last couple of weeks Ditton Minors Youth U8 started their Autumn/Winter League games with a home match against K Sports Youth on a cold but sunny Saturday morning. Having lost to K Sports earlier in the season the boys were keen to see if they could win this repeat fixture.

Starting with Arthur in goal, Ollie and Joe G in defence and Theo and Evan up front Ditton got off to a confident start with some good early passing and playing. After a couple of minutes we were soon rewarded when a Ditton attack saw K Sports concede a corner. This was taken by Ollie who managed to curl the ball beautifully into the K Sports goal.

The positive play continued in this period with Evan making a strong run down the right wing and then crossing into the box but alas no Ditton players were able to get their foot on the ball. K Sports ramped up the pressure and were soon rewarded with a goal of their own as the ball just sailed over the outstretched fingers of Arthur and into goal.

Ditton continued to move forward positively and we were rewarded with a great goal and finish for Theo. A close period of play continued. K Sports won a corner and the ball snuck into the Ditton goal at the near post off an unlucky Ditton foot. K Sports managed to grab another in this period, but Ditton continued to play both attacking and defensive football positively.

The second period saw Max, Joe T and Eddie come on. Again some very close play in this period, and K Sports continued to apply pressure. Some great play from Max from defence saw him bring the ball out strongly along the right wing and cross to Eddie who was unlucky to see his shot bounce off the underside of the crossbar but stay out of the K Sports goal!  Some more examples of great link up play from all players went unrewarded for Ditton. K Sports managed to grab another goal in this period which went against much of the run of play.

In the third period Ollie was back on in defence, with Alfie, Theo and Eddie in midfield and attacking positions. As with the second period this was another close period of play between the two teams. Both teams had chances. Arthur continued, as he has done throughout the game so far, been a rock in the Ditton goal keeping many of the K Sports chances out. One K Sports attack did get through which was a well-taken effort from their players with a great turn and short attack from one of their strongest players.

As with the other periods of play the final period was well fought by both teams.  Max and Alfie kept a solid defence, with Joe T and Evan pushing hard up front. This final period saw some tired legs result in some errors by both teams. An unlucky period saw K Sports grab some more goals but Ditton did not lose faith and spirit. An amazing strike from Alfie was justly rewarded with a great goal. Towards the end of play a Ditton free kick was struck strongly by Max - this deflected off a K Sports player but Max was quick with the follow up and his equally fiercely struck second attempt flew into the K Sports goal!

A defeat but some very positive periods of play. Great running with the ball from defence, improved passing, four separate players on the scoresheet were great to see. The unlucky near misses on goal from Ditton players would have made the game much closer but a great display in goal from Arthur meant he was a well deserved man of the match.
