Report

Our first match of 2018 was an away game versus Borough Green Colts on a cold, but thankfully, dry Saturday.

We started with Arthur in goal, Ollie and Alfie in defence/midfield and Evan and Eddie as strikers.  Any concerns that, after three weeks without a competitive match, we would see "Christmas cobwebs" from the team were soon allayed when Ditton started brightly.  Improved passing from defensive and midfield positions saw a solid start to the game.

The pressure Ditton applied to the Borough Green goal was soon rewarded with a great 1-2 pass between Evan and Eddie in the Borough Green area which saw Eddie opening the goal tally.

This early lead settled Ditton and a great cross field pass from Alfie, in defence, to Evan saw great attacking play, but alas Evan's shot went wide.  Evan continued to have a great first period of play with solid and spirited attacking football. This push saw Evan attack the Borough Green goal again, but his shot went off the Borough Green post.  Eddie had some good battles up front, and was eventually rewarded for his tenacity with another well taken goal. Evan was again unlucky not to be rewarded for his efforts, with a great pass from Eddie, but he was unable to convert the shot.

The second period of play saw Ollie joined in defence by Joe G, and Theo and Joe T come on in attacking positions. This was a closer 10 minutes of play which was fought well by both teams. Good midfield pressure resulted in an attacking Ditton corner but this was well defended by Borough Green.  Borough Green had a solid period of play and had numerous attacking moves on the Ditton goal.  Despite solid defending and goalkeeping from Arthur we eventually found ourselves having to pick the ball out of the back of our own net.

The third period of play saw Joe G and Alfie in defence, with Joe T and Evan as strikers.  Ditton were soon on the attack and the resulting corner was brilliantly taken by Alfie with Joe T scoring confidently.  Despite the strong start we soon found ourselves caught in defence, and Borough Green took advantage of this and scored.  Evan applied pressure along the right wing and had a strong attacking run.  He continued to play strongly, and his pressure was rewarded with a great pass to Joe who's initial shot was well saved, but he quickly followed up to score.

Borough Green had a quick break from defence, off a Ditton corner.  Their initial shot was well saved by Arthur but a great turn in the box and shot by Borough Green saw them score.  Ditton continued to play well and attack Borough Green's goal.  Pressure from Joe T was rewarded with a great pass, and volley from Evan which flew into the Borough Green goal.

The final period of play saw the end to end nature of the game continue.  Ditton got off to a bright start - a fantastic goal kick from Arthur took one bounce and was struck firmly by Eddie into the back of the Borough Green goal.  A defensive mistake saw us play the ball back across goal and this was quickly seized on by Borough Green who converted their chance.  We continued to apply pressure and chase the ball when we needed to and great battling from Eddie saw him grab another goal and complete a thoroughly well deserved win for Ditton.

For his well taken goals, but most importantly his positive, attacking spirit Evan was a well deserved man of the match.  A great game, result notwithstanding, due to the positive way the team played and a great start to 2018!
