Report

Our first home game of 2018 was played in dry, but very muddy conditions at the Old Rec, against Sittingbourne Lions Whites.

Ditton started with Arthur in goal, Max and Ollie in defence and Evan and Eddie as strikers and soon had some great attacking play against the Sittingbourne goal.  A strong cross from Eddie into the box saw Evan’s shot on goal going just wide.  We continued to pressure the Sittingbourne goal and this resulted in a free kick to Ditton.  This was taken by Max and the cross into the box saw Eddie score.  Evan was then unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself with his attempt going just wide after some great passing out of defence and then forward from Ollie.  Upfront Eddie and Evan continued to pass and communicate well - putting together several great attacking plays which Sittingbourne defended well.  Sittingbourne had some strong attacking runs themselves and these drew a couple of great saves from Arthur who was supported well by Max and Ollie in defence.  Again, some great passing between the attackers saw Evan and Eddie pass well between them to open up the Sittingbourne defence and for Evan to get on the scoresheet at last for a well deserved goal.  Another great attack from out of defence saw Max, Eddie and Evan link up again for Evan to grab another goal.

A solid start from Ditton.

The next period saw Joe G join Ollie in defence and Theo join Eddie in attack.  This proved to be a much closer period of play.  We continued to attack and Ollie’s free kick was well saved by the Sittingbourne keeper to go behind for a corner.  Ditton continued to apply pressure but Sittingbourne had some attacking periods of play of their own.  One of these saw a corner for Sittingbourne which just snuck into the Ditton goal at the near post.  Eddie had a shot go just wide off a Ditton throw-in deep in the Sittingbourne half.  Joe G had a strong and passionate forward run, shrugging off 2 or 3 tackles from Sittingbourne players and drawing out a great piece of defending to just miss out on a shot at goal.  Sittingbourne grabbed another goal late in this period.

The third period, like the second, was a close.  Max joined Joe G in defence, with Alfie and Evan playing up front.  A Ditton attack saw us win a free kick in front of goal, about 8 yards outside the box.  Max stepped up and fired the ball low in the right hand corner, with the Sittingbourne keeper unable to reach it.  Ditton then had some defending to do - a Sittingbourne shot was pushed onto the post by Arthur which then ran along the goal line before being cleared - close, but no goal.  Whilst we had some good movement there was not enough talking between the players and too often attacking plays broke down.  Another attack from Ditton saw Evan brought down in the box.  Max stepped up to take the penalty, but alas this was well saved.

The final period saw us play with Ollie and Alfie in defence, and Theo and Eddie upfront.  Sittingbourne started well and soon had a corner although this was well defended by Ditton.  Ollie came out of defence with a strong forward run and played a solid cross field pass to Eddie in the box but the shot went just wide.  The boys picked up the pace for the last few minutes.  Another great pass from Ollie to Theo, out on the right, who in turn passed back to Eddie in the middle saw us grab another goal. There then followed some great link up play between Alfie, Theo and Eddie with a shot from Theo going just wide.  A throw in to Ditton saw the ball played back into Sittingbourne’s box and Theo turn and short.  Again, another great run from Ollie out of defence to bring the ball forward saw Eddie grab another goal and Ditton secure the win.

Ollie was Man of the Match for his balance of great defence and attacking forward play which enabled Ditton to grab some of our goals.
